Flint-based Literary Anthology to be Published July 12

Mark's Hat

Flint, MI / 23 June, 2014 – The Flint-based Gothic Funk Press will publish Mark’s Hat, an anthology of innovative literature entirely written by current Flint residents this July 12.

Mark’s Hat will include fiction, nonfiction, and poetry by Paul Counelis, Nic Custer, Michael Kelly, Bob Mabbitt, Ruby Spademan, Tom Sumner, and Jan Worth-Nelson.

Mark’s Hat will be officially launched on Saturday, July 12th, 1-3 PM at Pages Bookstore, 134 2nd Street in Flint. Light refreshments will be served and published writers are invited to read their selections at the event. Questions may be directed to connor@connorcoyne.com.

A limited print run of Mark’s Hat will be available at the launch event and copies will be donated to local libraries and universities. An online version of the anthology will be available through the Gothic Funk press website at http://gothicfunkpress.com.

Gothic Funk Press, which is based in Flint and specializes in innovative writing, defines “experimental” literature as “writing that is intentionally unusual, weird, contradictory, paradoxical, and/or self-aware.” Submissions were accepted from February through the end of April.

In order to submit, writers had to be residents of the City of Flint.

Submissions were reviewed by a panel of five readers: Gothic Funk Press Director Connor Coyne, Desiree Duell, M.L. Kennedy, Brittany Reed, and Reinhardt Suarez.

Mark’s Hat, whose name is inspired by the vigorous public debate surrounding Mark’s House, a 2013 art installation, hopes to encourage new writers and new innovative writing from a uniquely Flint perspective. The Press is also mindful that many significant decisions for the city are made by outsiders, such as by the state-appointed Emergency Manager; by focusing exclusively on Flint residents, the Gothic Funk Press seeks to amplify the voices of Flint writers.

Mark’s Hat is funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign that concluded at the end of November 2013.

Gothic Funk Press has published Hungry Rats (2010) and Shattering Glass (2013), both by Flint author Connor Coyne. The Press hopes that Mark’s Hat will be the first of many projects to feature creative work by numerous writers from Flint, Michigan and around the world.
